I took the overnight sleeper service from Hua Lamphong station in Bangkok in a 2nd class sleeper, arriving in Chiang Mai the next day. I had hoped to get a 1st class sleeper but being the weekend of the Flower festival in Chiang Mai I had to take the very last train of the day and got the last sleeper on the train.
